Best Upholstery Cleaner Machine: 5 Portable Picks, Matched to Your Fabric’s Cleaning Code

The best upholstery cleaner machine for most homes is the BISSELL Little Green 1400B: it has a 48 oz clean water tank, weighs 9.7 lb, and holds 4.5/5 from 94,000+ Amazon ratings, more owner feedback than any other portable cleaner we looked at. But before you buy any of the five machines below, turn your sofa cushion over and find the cleaning code on the tag. A spray-and-suction machine is only safe on fabric coded W or W/S. On S or X fabric, every machine on this list is the wrong tool.

How we chose

This is a custom furniture and upholstery site, so this list starts from the fabric, not the machine. We did not run our own lab trials on these cleaners. We compared the published specs on each manufacturer’s site or Amazon listing (tank size, weight, cord length, included tools), read the manufacturers’ own guidance on which fabrics and formulas they allow, and checked Amazon’s aggregate owner ratings in October 2026. We left out any spec we could not find on a manufacturer page or listing, so some table cells say “not listed” rather than guessing.

All five are portable spot cleaners rather than full-size upright carpet cleaners. For upholstery that is the right category: you need a hose and a small hand tool that can work a seat cushion, an arm or a tufted back, and a full upright can’t do that.

Check your fabric’s cleaning code first

Most upholstered furniture sold in the US carries a one- or two-letter cleaning code on the tag under the cushion or on the deck. The codes mean the following, per furniture retailers’ published care guides (Frontgate, Keck Furniture, Sailrite):

  • W – water-based cleaners are fine. Frontgate’s care sheet says you can use “an upholstery attachment on a carpet cleaner” on W fabric, but warns against over-wetting. This is the code a spot cleaner machine is made for.
  • W/S – water-based or solvent cleaners. A machine is usually OK, but pre-test on a hidden area and don’t saturate.
  • S – solvent only, no water. Keck’s guide says flatly: never use water, steam or foam on S fabrics. A water extractor is the wrong tool here.
  • X – vacuum or brush only. No water, no solvent. Call a professional for stains.

Frontgate’s sheet lists velvet and many textured wovens under S or W/S, and chenille under W. If the tag is gone, assume the fabric is not machine-safe until a patch test on the underside of the deck dries clean. Leather is out entirely: Shark’s support page says it does not recommend the StainStriker on leather, and none of the other makers sell these as leather cleaners.

If you are buying a vintage piece to reupholster, the old fabric’s code matters less than what goes on next. Our guide to buying flea-market furniture to reupholster covers what to check before you buy.

1. BISSELL Little Green 1400B: best for most W-code sofas

The original Little Green is the default pick because of the size of its owner base: 4.5/5 from more than 94,800 Amazon ratings, and Amazon listed it as the #1 best seller in Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning Machines when we checked. An average that high across that many owners is hard to fake with a handful of early reviews.

Who it’s for: anyone with a W or W/S sofa, dining chairs or an upholstered headboard who wants to deal with spills when they happen instead of booking a pro.

Skip it if: you need to clean a whole sectional in one session. A spot cleaner of this size is meant for spots and single cushions.

  • Pro: 48 oz clean water tank, the largest published tank among the machines here.
  • Pro: 9.7 lb with a carry handle. Light enough to set on a sofa arm or a stair while you work.
  • Pro: Spray, scrub and suction happen through one hand tool, so you’re not wetting fabric you can’t extract from.
  • Con: BISSELL doesn’t publish cord length on the listing we checked, so measure the distance from your outlet to the sofa and plan for an extension cord if needed.
  • Con: This is the base model. The HydroRinse self-cleaning tool is on newer Little Green variants such as the Mini, not this one.

2. BISSELL Little Green Mini 4075: best for small spaces and car seats

The Mini is the compact version of the Little Green, and BISSELL markets it for staircases, car interiors and tight storage. It holds 4.5/5 from more than 11,300 Amazon ratings. Its main upgrade over the 1400B is the HydroRinse self-cleaning tool: you rinse the hose and tool with clean water after each job instead of letting residue sit in the hose between uses.

Who it’s for: apartment owners with one loveseat, and anyone who wants one machine for the sofa and the car.

Skip it if: you want to compare capacity on paper before buying.

  • Pro: HydroRinse self-cleaning tool and a 4-inch tough stain tool, per the listing title.
  • Pro: BISSELL describes it as lightweight and compact, built for stairs and car interiors.
  • Con: Neither BISSELL’s product page nor the listing we checked gives tank size or weight, so you can’t compare it with the others on specs.
  • Con: Fewer owner ratings than the 1400B, so less long-term feedback so far.

3. BISSELL SpotClean Pro 3624: best for larger jobs and pet households

BISSELL calls the SpotClean Pro its “most powerful portable spot and stain remover.” It carries the highest average rating in this group, 4.6/5 from more than 28,400 Amazon ratings. Its 20 ft power cord is the longest we could confirm, which matters when the outlet is behind a sofa you don’t want to drag across the room.

Who it’s for: households with pets or kids that clean upholstery often, and anyone doing a full cushion-by-cushion refresh on a W-code sofa.

Skip it if: you’ll be carrying it upstairs a lot. At 13 lb it’s the heaviest machine here.

  • Pro: 20 ft cord, per BISSELL’s spec page.
  • Pro: Highest average owner rating in this list.
  • Pro: The user guide lists a 2-year limited warranty.
  • Con: 13 lb, 3.3 to 4.5 lb heavier than the others.
  • Con: The user guide says to use only BISSELL cleaning formulas to avoid internal damage, and that commercial use voids the warranty. Budget for BISSELL solution, and don’t buy it for a cleaning business.
  • Con: Amazon now lists a newer version (SpotClean Pet Pro 15585), so check which model you’re getting.

4. Hoover CleanSlate Plus FH14050: the alternative to BISSELL

The CleanSlate Plus is the main non-BISSELL choice with a large owner base: 4.3/5 from more than 11,500 Amazon ratings. Hoover describes it as combining strong suction with a larger tank and an Oxy formula. It weighs 9.4 lb according to the Amazon listing, almost the same as the Little Green 1400B.

Who it’s for: buyers who want a second brand to compare, or who already use Hoover carpet solution.

Skip it if: you want the strongest owner ratings behind your purchase. Its 4.3 average is the lowest in this group.

  • Pro: 9.4 lb, compact 14 x 10.5 x 13 in footprint.
  • Pro: Ships with an accessory kit, and Amazon links both a user guide and a manual in PDF form.
  • Con: Lowest average rating of the five (4.3/5).
  • Con: Hoover’s own product page for this model was offline when we checked, so tank capacity and cord length aren’t confirmed here.

5. Shark StainStriker PX202: best published spec sheet, lightest machine

Shark publishes the most complete spec sheet of any machine here: 8.51 lb, a 40.58 oz clean tank, a 24.35 oz dirty tank, 450 W, and a 12 ft cord. It’s the lightest machine on the list and holds 4.5/5 from more than 5,700 Amazon ratings. This bundle comes with four tools: 3.5-inch and 7-inch stain tools, a crevice tool and a pet mess tool. The 3.5-inch tool is the size you want for tufted backs and narrow chair arms.

Who it’s for: anyone who wants to know exactly what they’re buying, and people who’ll carry the machine from room to room.

Skip it if: your outlets are far from the furniture. The 12 ft cord is 8 ft shorter than the SpotClean Pro’s.

  • Pro: Lightest machine here at 8.51 lb.
  • Pro: Separate published capacities for the clean and dirty tanks.
  • Pro: Four tools, including a small 3.5-inch head for upholstery details.
  • Con: 12 ft cord.
  • Con: Shark recommends using only its CarpetXpert Deep Clean Pro and StainStriker Oxy Multiplier formulas, and says other solutions may harm the machine. That’s two consumables to keep stocked.
  • Con: Not recommended on leather, or on delicate cotton, wool or silk rugs without a manufacturer tag.

Which one should you buy?

Start with the tag, then match the machine to the job:

  • Code S or X: don’t buy a water extractor for this piece. Use a dry-cleaning solvent per the tag for S, vacuum and brush only for X, and call a professional cleaner for set-in stains.
  • Code W or W/S, one sofa, occasional spills: BISSELL Little Green 1400B.
  • Small apartment or sofa plus car: Little Green Mini 4075.
  • Pets, kids, or a full cushion-by-cushion refresh: SpotClean Pro 3624, if 13 lb doesn’t bother you.
  • Stairs, a second floor, or you want the lightest machine: Shark StainStriker PX202, if the 12 ft cord reaches.

Whatever you buy, two habits protect the fabric. First, vacuum before you wet-clean: Shark’s support page recommends picking up loose dry debris with a regular vacuum first, because these machines are built for wet messes. Second, don’t over-wet. Frontgate’s care sheet warns against it even on W fabric, and Keck’s guide says to blot rather than rub. Several light passes with full suction are gentler on the fabric than one soaking pass.

When a machine won’t fix it

A spot cleaner lifts fresh spills and surface grime. It won’t fix fabric that’s worn through, faded or pilled, or a cushion that has gone flat. At that point cleaning only buys time, and the real choice is whether the frame is worth new fabric. We break down that decision in the time and costs of reupholstering an armchair and why quality upholstery is worth the investment. If you plan to do the job yourself, our upholstery staple gun picks are the next tool you’ll need.

FAQ

Can I use a carpet cleaner on my couch?

Only if the couch is coded W or W/S and the machine has a hose with a hand tool for upholstery. Full-size upright carpet cleaners aren’t designed for cushions. All five machines above are portable spot cleaners with hand tools.

What does the X cleaning code mean on furniture?

X means vacuum or light brushing only. Frontgate’s care sheet says not to use water or solvent-based cleaners at all. Leave stains to a professional.

Can I use any cleaning solution in these machines?

Check the manual first. BISSELL’s SpotClean Pro guide says to use only BISSELL formulas, and Shark says to use only its two StainStriker-compatible formulas. Both makers say other solutions may damage the machine.

Is a portable upholstery cleaner worth it compared with hiring a pro?

For fresh spills on W-code fabric, yes: you can treat the stain right away instead of waiting for an appointment. For S or X fabric, antique pieces, or a whole-room deep clean, a professional upholstery cleaner is the safer choice.
