The quickest support for a sagging couch cushion is a folding board that slides under the seat cushions and bridges the worn springs or webbing. Our top pick is the Gorilla Grip Couch Cushion Support Board, because it publishes the two numbers that matter (0.43-inch plywood, 400 lb limit) and comes in nine sizes, including 90- and 96-inch lengths for long sofas. Before you buy any board, though, spend two minutes on the test below: a board fixes a sunken seat deck, not a flattened cushion.

First, find out what is actually sagging
A sofa seat has three layers: the cushion, the suspension under it (sinuous springs or elastic webbing), and the frame. Each one fails differently, and each one needs a different fix. Do this before ordering anything:
- Swap the cushions. Move the cushion from your sunken spot to a seat nobody uses. If the dip moves with the cushion, the foam has lost its recovery. A board will not help much; the foam needs replacing.
- Take the cushions off and press the deck. Push down with a flat hand across each seat. If one area drops much further than the others, or you can feel a spring that sits lower than its neighbors, the suspension is the problem. This is exactly what a support board is built for.
- Rock the arms and back. If the arms wobble, a joint creaks or the frame rail is cracked, no insert will hold up for long. That sofa needs a repair at the frame, or a decision about whether it is worth keeping.
Most sofas that feel “done” have a mix of tired foam and stretched springs. In that case, start with a board (cheaper, reversible) and see whether the remaining softness bothers you. If it does, new foam goes on top of the board later. Our guide to high density foam for couch cushions covers how to pick density and firmness for that step.
How we chose
We did not test these boards in person. We compared the specs each brand publishes on its Amazon listing or its own website (material, thickness, weight limit, available sizes), Amazon’s rating counts, and the review summaries Amazon generates from owner reviews. We kept only boards with a published size range and at least 800 ratings, and we noted where a listing gives incomplete or contradictory data. Ratings were checked on October 23, 2026. Amazon pools ratings across all sizes of a listing, so the count covers the whole product family, not one size.

Depth is the front-to-back measurement of the board. The size that fits is the one closest to your sofa’s inside seat (arm to arm, front rail to back rail) without being larger. More on measuring in the buying guide below.
1. Gorilla Grip Couch Cushion Support Board: best overall
Gorilla Grip’s own product page lists 0.43-inch plywood panels, a 400 lb maximum, and hundreds of PVC grip dots on the underside to stop the board sliding on the deck. The panels have rounded corners, and the board folds and stacks, so a longer size can be folded to fit a loveseat. Amazon’s review summary highlights functionality, support and durability, with owners describing older couches that feel close to new again.
Who it’s for: most standard and long sofas with sagging springs, especially sectionals and oversized pieces. The 21.5 x 90 and 21.5 x 96 sizes cover sofas that most competitors skip.
Skip it if: your seat is deeper than 24 inches. Gorilla Grip tops out at 24 inches deep, so a deep-seat sofa is better served by BEN’SHOME or LAVEVE.
- Pro: the thickness and weight limit are both published, on the maker’s site and on Amazon.
- Pro: the widest length range in this list, from a 19-inch armchair panel to 96 inches.
- Pro: plywood rather than MDF or particle board, per the maker.
- Pro: anti-slip dots on the underside.
- Con: no option deeper than 24 inches.
- Con: the 24-inch-deep sizes are sold as separate Amazon listings, so make sure the link you land on matches your measured depth before ordering.
2. Meliusly Couch Cushion Support Board: best fabric-wrapped board
Meliusly builds its board from 8 mm poplar LVL (laminated veneer lumber), which the listing says is moisture-controlled to resist warping. The panels are wrapped in 600D Oxford fabric coated on both sides, with beveled edges and an anti-skid finish underneath. The panels connect at fold lines, so the board unfolds as one piece instead of several loose slats you have to line up. Owners in Amazon’s review summary mention quick setup and a seat that is firmer but not hard.
Who it’s for: anyone worried about the board scuffing the cushion casings, and owners of wide or deep sofas. The 28-inch depth is the deepest fixed-size option here apart from BEN’SHOME’s 30-inch deep-seat board.
Skip it if: you need a published weight rating. We did not find one on the Amazon listing.
- Pro: fabric wrap and beveled edges protect the cushion covers.
- Pro: one-piece folding design, no loose panels.
- Pro: eight sizes, including 28 inches deep.
- Pro: highest average rating in this group (4.6/5 from 4,998 ratings).
- Con: at 8 mm, the panels are thinner than the 0.43-inch (about 11 mm) Gorilla Grip and 0.5-inch BEN’SHOME boards.
- Con: the listing says it only works with sofas that have removable seat cushions.
3. LAVEVE Heavy Duty Couch Cushion Support Board: best for oversized sofas
LAVEVE sells solid wood boards with anti-slip dots, rated at 400 lb per board, and its range runs from a 21.5 x 23 armchair panel to a 30 x 81 oversized-sofa board. It is the most-rated board here after BEN’SHOME (5,943 ratings, 4.5/5). Amazon’s summary of owner reviews points to good support for sinking couches, firmness without being too stiff, and good value against replacing the sofa.
Who it’s for: large, deep sofas (the 30 x 81 size) and households that want matching boards for the sofa and an armchair.
Skip it if: exact thickness matters to you, for example on a sofa where the cushions already sit close to the arm tops. The 21.5 x 70 listing gives 0.4 inches in its dimensions and 0.7 inches elsewhere on the same page, so we can’t tell you which is right.
- Pro: 400 lb rating per board.
- Pro: 30-inch deep size for deep-seat sofas.
- Pro: armchair size available, useful for a set.
- Con: contradictory thickness data on the listing.
- Con: fewer length options in the standard 21.5-inch depth than Gorilla Grip.
4. BEN’SHOME Couch Cushion Support Board: best adjustable length
BEN’SHOME uses 0.5-inch solid wood boards, rated to 400 lb, and its main selling point is an adjustable length: the standard board covers sofas from 58 to 67 inches inside, and the deep-seat version covers 68 to 81 inches. Depth options are 19.7, 23, 27 and 30 inches. With 9,369 ratings, it has the largest owner base of any board here. Amazon’s review summary mentions firmer cushions, less sag in the middle seat and good value.
Who it’s for: sofas with an odd inside width that falls between the fixed sizes other brands sell, and deep-seat sofas (27 or 30 inches).
Skip it if: your sofa is a standard 21-24 inch depth and around 70 inches wide, where a fixed-size board from Gorilla Grip or LAVEVE fits without adjusting. Also check the depth carefully: the base version is 19.7 inches deep, shallower than most sofa seats.
- Pro: adjustable length covers in-between widths.
- Pro: thickest board with a clearly published figure (0.5 inch).
- Pro: four depth options up to 30 inches.
- Pro: the most ratings of any board in this list.
- Con: slightly lower average rating (4.4/5) than the others.
- Con: the base model’s 19.7-inch depth leaves the front or back of a typical seat unsupported.
5. Golden Home Essentials Heavy Duty Couch Cushion Support Board: a newer adjustable option
Golden Home Essentials sells a 21 x 72 board that adjusts in length from 60 to 72 inches and has an anti-slip underside, according to its Amazon title. It holds 4.6/5 from 813 ratings, which is high but based on far fewer owners than the other four boards.
Who it’s for: a standard sofa between 60 and 72 inches inside width, if you want an adjustable board in the common 21-inch depth.
Skip it if: you want a documented material, thickness and weight rating. The data we checked did not include them.
- Pro: adjustable 60-72 inch length.
- Pro: strong average rating.
- Con: far fewer ratings than the other boards, so less owner history.
- Con: material, thickness and weight limit not published in the data we checked.
How to pick the right size
Size errors are the most common reason a board doesn’t work, because a board that is too large rides up the arms or back and leaves a ridge under the cushion. Gorilla Grip and Meliusly both tell buyers to measure before ordering. Here is how:
- Remove all seat cushions.
- Measure the inside width from the inside of one arm to the inside of the other, at the level of the deck.
- Measure the depth from the front rail to the point where the deck meets the back.
- Pick the board that is equal or slightly smaller in both directions. A board an inch or two short still supports the seat; one that is too long won’t sit flat.
Then match your numbers to a brand:
- Loveseat (about 48-54 in inside): Meliusly 21 x 48 or 24 x 48, LAVEVE 21.5 x 48, Gorilla Grip 21.5 x 54 or 24 x 54.
- Standard sofa (about 68-72 in): Gorilla Grip 21.5 x 70, LAVEVE 21.5 x 70, Meliusly 21 x 72, Golden Home 21 x 72.
- Odd width between 58 and 67 in: BEN’SHOME adjustable.
- Long sofa (78-96 in): Gorilla Grip 21.5 x 78, 90 or 96, Meliusly 79-inch sizes, LAVEVE 30 x 81.
- Deep seat (27 in or more): Meliusly 28-inch sizes, BEN’SHOME 27 or 30, LAVEVE 30 x 81.
- Armchair: Gorilla Grip 23 x 19 or LAVEVE 21.5 x 23.
When a board is the wrong fix
A support board only replaces the job of the springs or webbing. It is the wrong purchase in these cases:
- Attached or tight-seat cushions. If the seat cushion is sewn to the frame, a board can’t go under it. Meliusly’s listing says outright that its board needs removable cushions.
- Flat foam. If the cushion-swap test moved the dip, replace the foam core instead. A board under flat foam just gives you a firm, thin seat.
- Broken frame or springs that have come loose. A board spreads load, but it can’t hold a cracked rail together. Re-tying springs or replacing webbing is upholstery work; see our breakdown of the time and costs of reupholstering an armchair for what that involves, and our picks for the best upholstery staple gun if you plan to replace webbing yourself.
- You like a soft, sink-in seat. Every board makes the seat firmer, because a flat panel replaces the give of the springs. That is the point for most people, but not everyone wants it.
The do-it-yourself version is a sheet of plywood cut to the deck size and laid under the cushions, which is what Lowe’s describes in its sagging-sofa guide. It works, but you need a saw, and a single rigid sheet doesn’t fold for storage or moving. The commercial boards above add anti-slip backing, rounded or wrapped edges and folding panels.
FAQ
Do couch cushion support boards really work?
They work when the sag comes from the springs or webbing under the cushion, because the board spreads your weight across the whole deck instead of letting one spot drop. All five boards here sit at 4.4/5 or higher on Amazon, from 813 to 9,369 ratings. They do much less when the foam itself is flattened.
Will a support board make my couch too hard?
It makes the seat firmer, because the springs no longer flex under you. How firm it feels depends on your cushions. On a cushion with good foam, the board mostly removes the dip. On thin or flat foam, you’ll feel the board, and new foam is the better fix.
Can I use a support board on a sectional or recliner?
On sectionals, yes: measure each section separately and buy a size per section. Gorilla Grip’s foldable panels and BEN’SHOME’s adjustable length make this easier. Recliner seats usually have attached cushions and a moving mechanism under them, so a board generally doesn’t fit.
How thick should a couch support board be?
The boards here range from 8 mm (about 0.31 in, Meliusly) to 0.5 in (BEN’SHOME). Thicker panels are stiffer, but they also raise the seat slightly. If your cushions already sit level with the arm tops, a thinner board keeps the seat height closer to what it was.
Should I fix my sofa or replace it?
If the frame is solid and you still like the size and fabric, a support board is a low-cost, reversible first step that costs a fraction of a new sofa. If the frame wobbles or cracks, or the fabric is worn through too, compare the cost of reupholstery with a new piece.
