For most furniture projects, the best chalk paint is Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint: it has the highest maker-stated coverage per ounce in this list (about 4.7 sq ft per fl oz), dries in 15 minutes and carries a 4.6/5 average from 7,000+ Amazon ratings. If you want classic waxed, aged finishes, pick Annie Sloan Chalk Paint. If you want to skip the separate sealing step, pick an all-in-one such as Country Chic.
Most chalk paint roundups rank brands by feel. This one compares what you can check on the can: how far each ounce goes, how long until the piece is usable, and how many products you have to buy to finish the job. That last point matters more than people expect, because a chalk paint that needs wax or a topcoat costs you a second product and a second cure period.
How we chose
We did not test these paints ourselves. We compared manufacturer technical data sheets and product pages (coverage, dry, recoat and cure times, VOC limits, interior vs. exterior rating), the Amazon listings for each product (rating and rating count, checked October 2026), and Amazon’s review summaries for recurring complaints. Where two sources disagree, we show both numbers. We left out prices because they change weekly; use the buttons to check the current one.
To make coverage comparable, we divided the maker’s stated coverage for one container by its size in fluid ounces. Those are one-coat figures under ideal conditions. Plan on two coats for most color changes.

Ratings on Amazon are pooled across colors and sometimes across sizes of the same product line, so treat them as a brand-line signal rather than a score for one specific can.
1. Dixie Belle Chalk Mineral Paint: best overall
Dixie Belle is the paint people in furniture-painting groups keep naming when someone asks which brand to buy, and the data sheet backs that up. The company states 8 oz covers about 38 sq ft, 16 oz about 75 sq ft and 32 oz up to 150 sq ft, which works out to roughly 4.7 sq ft per ounce at every size. Dry time is 15 minutes and the company lists a 21-30 day cure. The line has over 80 colors and is rated for interior and exterior use.
Who it’s for: dressers, nightstands and side tables where you want a flat chalky finish and the option to distress the edges.
Who should skip it: anyone who wants to paint and walk away. Dixie Belle sells its Glossy, Satin, Flat and Gator Hide topcoats separately, and for a tabletop or a dresser top you will want one.
- Highest stated coverage per ounce in this comparison
- 15-minute dry time lets you do two coats in one session
- No sanding or priming required on most surfaces, per the maker
- Sold in 8, 16 and 32 oz, so a small project doesn’t force you into a quart
Cons: the 21-30 day cure means a fresh piece scuffs more easily for the first few weeks. The paint is thick; the company’s own blog says lighter colors usually need two coats and suggests thinning with a little water.

2. Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Paint: best for large or multi-piece jobs
Rust-Oleum’s brush-on Chalked paint comes in a 30 oz can. The technical data sheet gives a practical coverage of 110-150 sq ft per quart, touch-dry in 30 minutes, handling after 1 hour and recoat after 2-4 hours. It is an acrylic, water-based paint with VOCs under 75 g/L, and Rust-Oleum rates it for interior use only.
Who it’s for: a bedroom set, a run of dining chairs, or anyone who wants a chalk finish they can also buy at the hardware store if they run out mid-project.
Who should skip it: outdoor furniture (the data sheet says interior only) and anyone set on a large designer color palette.
- Large 30 oz can for bigger pieces
- Coverage and dry times documented in a published technical data sheet
- Matching Chalked clear topcoat and decorative glaze in the same line
- The largest rating pool of any brush-on paint here
Cons: the “one coat” claim doesn’t hold for big color changes. One Amazon reviewer needed two to three coats over dark wood. The Amazon listing groups the brush-on can and the spray in one product family, so the rating is shared between them.

3. Heirloom Traditions All-in-One Paint: best no-topcoat option for cabinets and tables
Heirloom Traditions isn’t sold as chalk paint, but it shows up in nearly every chalk paint search because it solves the same problem: painting furniture without sanding or priming. The listing says no sanding, no priming and no topcoat required. It dries to a low-luster, velvet sheen rather than a dead-flat chalky look, and it is rated for interior and exterior use. Stated coverage is 140 sq ft per quart (about 4.4 sq ft per ounce), 35 sq ft for the 8 oz sample and 500 sq ft for a gallon.
Who it’s for: kitchen tables, desks and painted cabinets, where a wax finish would wear through and you want one product from start to finish.
Who should skip it: anyone chasing the matte, chippy farmhouse look. The sheen reads more finished than chalk paint.
- Built-in topcoat, so there’s no second product or second cure period to plan for
- Interior/exterior rating
- Gallon size available for whole-room cabinet jobs
Cons: Amazon’s review summary for the Cashmere color reports mixed feedback on coverage and durability. Some buyers find it more durable than other paints, while others say it scratches off. Cure-time figures differ between listings (24 vs. 48 hours), so wait the longer figure before heavy use.

4. Annie Sloan Chalk Paint: best for waxed, aged finishes
Annie Sloan developed Chalk Paint in 1990, and it’s the formula the category is named after. The Amazon listing says a 1-liter can covers about 140 sq ft, and the brand’s stockists give the same figure as about 13 m², roughly the size of a small hutch. Drying time is about 30 minutes. Annie Sloan says the paint should be sealed with its Chalk Paint Wax or Chalk Paint Lacquer.
Who it’s for: a centerpiece piece where you want to layer colors, apply dark wax for an antique look, or sand back edges for a worn finish.
Who should skip it: budget flips and high-wear surfaces. The wax route means another product and another wait.
- The original chalk paint formula, with the widest set of tutorials for wax and paint effects
- Can be thinned with water into a wash, per the maker
- Low VOC, according to the listing
- Brushes clean up with water
Cons: sealing is mandatory. Stockists say Chalk Paint Wax takes 5-21 days to cure, so use coasters until then. Amazon’s review summary is mixed on value for money and texture, and some buyers describe the paint as lumpy. It has the smallest rating pool of the brush-on paints here.

5. Country Chic All-in-One Chalk Paint: best chalky look with a built-in topcoat
Country Chic is a clay-based chalk-style paint with a built-in primer and topcoat. The company says it contains no phthalates, formaldehyde, heavy metals or solvents. It dries to the touch in 30 minutes and can be recoated after 1 hour. The brand’s coverage guide says a 32 oz quart covers about 120 sq ft and a 16 oz pint about 60 sq ft with one coat. A newer post on the same blog describes coverage as based on two coats, so plan with the lower figure.
Who it’s for: kids’ room furniture, side tables and decor, where you want a matte chalky finish without adding wax.
Who should skip it: large jobs on a tight budget. It has the lowest stated coverage per ounce of the brush-on paints here.
- Built-in primer and topcoat in one can
- Short recoat window (1 hour)
- Easy to distress, per the maker
- Sizes from a 4 oz project jar up to a quart
Cons: lower coverage per ounce means buying more paint for the same piece. For tabletops that get wiped daily, the brand sells separate topcoats for extra protection.

6. Rust-Oleum Chalked Ultra Matte Spray: best for chairs, spindles and wicker
A spray can makes sense on pieces with lots of edges, such as spindle-back chairs, turned legs, wicker and metal hardware, where a brush leaves drips in the joints. Rust-Oleum’s 12 oz Chalked spray is oil-based, dries to the touch in 20 minutes and can be handled after 1 hour. Retailers list its coverage as 12 sq ft per can (True Value) or up to 20 sq ft (Shipt).
Who it’s for: chairs, frames and small decor where speed and an even coat matter more than cost per square foot.
Who should skip it: flat surfaces like a dresser top. At about 1-1.7 sq ft per ounce, it covers a fraction of what the brush-on paints do.
- No brush marks on detailed or turned surfaces
- Fast 20-minute touch-dry time
- Same Chalked color range as the brush-on version, so you can mix methods on one piece
Cons: Amazon’s review summary reports mixed spray performance. Some buyers get even coverage, while others report uneven spray or a nozzle that stops working. It’s oil-based, so spray outdoors or in a well-ventilated space.

How much chalk paint do you need for a piece of furniture?
Measure each surface you’ll paint (top, sides, drawer fronts, legs) in inches, multiply height by width, add them up and divide by 144 to get square feet. Double that for two coats, then divide by the paint’s sq ft per ounce from the table.
Worked example: say your dresser’s painted surfaces add up to 40 sq ft. Two coats make 80 sq ft. With Dixie Belle at about 4.7 sq ft per ounce, that’s roughly 17 oz, so one 16 oz jar is cutting it close and a 32 oz jar is the safe buy. With Country Chic at about 3.75 sq ft per ounce, you’d need about 21 oz, which is one quart. With the spray, at 12-20 sq ft per can, the same job would need four to seven cans. That’s why spray is best kept for chairs and details.
Which chalk paint fits your project?
- Dining table, desk or kitchen island base: a built-in-topcoat paint (Heirloom Traditions or Country Chic), or Dixie Belle plus a hard topcoat. Skip wax on surfaces that get wiped daily.
- Dresser or nightstand you want to distress: Dixie Belle or Annie Sloan. Both are thick enough to sand back at the edges.
- Antique look with dark wax: Annie Sloan, since its wax and paint are designed as one system.
- Several pieces at once on a budget: Rust-Oleum Chalked in the 30 oz can, indoors only.
- Outdoor bench or porch chair: Dixie Belle or Heirloom Traditions, which are rated interior/exterior. Rust-Oleum’s brush-on Chalked is interior only.
- Spindle chairs, wicker, metal frames: Rust-Oleum Chalked spray.

FAQ
Do you have to seal chalk paint on furniture?
It depends on the paint. Annie Sloan says its Chalk Paint should be sealed with wax or lacquer. Dixie Belle and Rust-Oleum make sealing optional but sell topcoats for high-traffic pieces. Country Chic and Heirloom Traditions have a topcoat built in. For tabletops and chair seats, a topcoat is worth the extra step on any brand.
Do you need to sand before using chalk paint?
All six makers say sanding and priming usually aren’t needed. Annie Sloan still says to clean the surface and remove loose paint or lacquer first, and to paint a test patch. Glossy laminate is where adhesion problems show up most, so scuff it lightly if a test patch peels.
How long does chalk paint take to cure?
Dry and cured are different. Most of these paints are dry to the touch in 15-30 minutes. Dixie Belle lists a 21-30 day cure. Annie Sloan’s stockists say its wax takes 5-21 days to cure and its lacquer about 14 days on tiles. Treat the piece gently until then.
What is the difference between chalk paint and all-in-one paint?
Classic chalk paint dries ultra-matte and usually gets a separate wax or topcoat. All-in-one paints such as Heirloom Traditions add the primer and topcoat to the formula. You get fewer steps, but a slightly more finished sheen and less of the chalky texture.
