For most sofa and chair cushion jobs, the best upholstery batting is a bonded polyester (Dacron) roll that is wide enough to wrap a cushion in one piece. Our top pick is the AK Trading Co. 48-inch bonded Dacron batting: it has by far the largest rating pool in this group, and a 48-inch roll fits two standard seat-cushion wraps side by side, so you waste less. Pick cotton only when you want a firmer, flatter layer on a seat or headboard.

How we chose
We did not test these rolls by hand. We compared the size, fiber and weight each seller lists on Amazon, the aggregate star rating and rating count shown on each listing, and Amazon’s “Customers say” summary, which is generated from the text of owner reviews. That summary is where the real complaints show up, mostly about thickness. We then converted every roll to square yards so you can compare how much material you actually get, because roll widths in this category run from 27 to 90 inches. All data was checked on October 25, 2026. Prices change daily, so we left them out.
Upholstery batting compared
| Batting | Fiber | Listed size | Area (sq yd) | Listed weight / thickness | Amazon rating (Oct 2026) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AK Trading Co. 48″ bonded Dacron | 100% polyester | 48″ x 5 yd | 6.7 | not listed | 4.4/5, 1,384 ratings |
| AK Trading Co. 27″ premium cotton | 100% cotton | 27″ x 2 yd | 1.5 | “14oz”, high loft | 4.5/5, 239 ratings (pooled across lengths) |
| RRKTP 230 GSM Dacron | polyester | 36″ x 5 yd | 5.0 | 230 g/m² (about 6.8 oz/sq yd) | 4.5/5, 239 ratings |
| PANDOROOM 200 GSM Dacron sheet | polyester | 90″ x 108″ | 7.5 | 200 g/m² (about 5.9 oz/sq yd), “medium thick” | 4.3/5, 228 ratings |
| Tatuo 59″ bonded polyester | polyester | 59″ x 2 yd x 0.1″ | 3.3 | 0.1″ thick | 4.3/5, 631 ratings |
Area is our arithmetic from the listed width and length (1 sq yd = 1,296 sq in). The ounce figures for the GSM rolls are converted at 33.9 g/m² per oz/sq yd. The two AK Trading cotton ratings are the same 239 on every length of that product, so Amazon pools them across the 1, 2, 3, 5 and 16-yard versions.
1. AK Trading Co. 48″ Bonded Dacron Batting: best for wrapping cushion foam
This is the roll to buy if you are re-covering sofa or chair cushions and want the foam edges to look rounded instead of boxy. The listing describes it as solid bonded, upholstery-grade Dacron, 48 inches wide, sold here as a 5-yard piece. It carries 4.4/5 from 1,384 Amazon ratings, roughly six times the review pool of anything else in this list.
Who it’s for: anyone wrapping seat and back cushions, especially if you have more than two. Skip it if: you need a thick, plush layer to hide lumpy old foam. Thickness is the most criticized point in the reviews.
- Pro: 48-inch width fits two 24-inch-wide cushion wraps across the roll.
- Pro: Amazon’s review summary rates quality, functionality and ease of use positively.
- Pro: 6.7 sq yd per piece, enough for about three typical seat cushions (see the yardage math below).
- Con: “Thickness” is flagged negative in 33 review mentions; several owners say it is thinner than expected.
- Con: some owners report the piece arriving shorter than ordered, so measure before you cut.
2. AK Trading Co. 27″ Premium Cotton Batting: best for seats, slip seats and headboards
Cotton batting packs flatter and firmer than polyester, which suits a dining-chair slip seat, a bench top or a padded headboard where you want a smooth surface under the fabric rather than a soft dome. The listing calls it 100% cotton, high loft, “14oz”, made in the USA, 27 inches wide. The 2-yard version is linked below; the same batting is sold in 1, 3, 5 and 16-yard lengths.
Who it’s for: small flat projects and anyone who prefers natural fiber. Skip it if: you are wrapping full sofa cushions. At 27 inches wide you will need to piece it, and joins can show through thin fabric.
- Pro: 4.5/5 from 239 ratings (pooled across lengths); reviews call it soft, as advertised and easy to work with.
- Pro: quality and cushioning are rated positive in the review summary.
- Pro: sold in five lengths, so you can buy close to what you need.
- Con: durability is mixed; some owners say it does not hold together under tension, so don’t stretch it hard while stapling.
- Con: thickness feedback is mixed. The seller does not explain the “14oz” figure, so it can’t be compared directly with the GSM rolls.
3. RRKTP 230 GSM Dacron Batting: heaviest listed weight
RRKTP is the only seller here that gives a weight per square meter heavy enough to compare: 230 g/m², about 6.8 oz per square yard. That is the heaviest stated weight in this list, and the roll is 36 inches wide and 5 yards long. It is rated 4.5/5 from 239 Amazon ratings.
Who it’s for: back cushions and pillow refreshes where softness matters more than structure; one owner mentions using it to refresh sofa back pillows. Skip it if: you need batting that stays put on vertical surfaces. “Stability” is the one aspect the review summary rates negative.
- Pro: highest stated weight (230 GSM) of the polyester rolls here.
- Pro: ease of use and softness lead the positive review aspects.
- Pro: 36-inch width covers a 22-inch-deep cushion wrap with room to trim.
- Con: thickness and durability feedback is mixed; some say it falls apart.
- Con: stability is rated negative, so it may shift unless you glue or tack it to the foam.
4. PANDOROOM 200 GSM Dacron Sheet: best for one-piece sofa wraps
Instead of a narrow roll, PANDOROOM sells a 90 x 108-inch sheet, which is 7.5 square yards, the most material in this comparison. The listing gives 200 GSM, about 5.9 oz per square yard, and describes it as medium thick. The big sheet is useful for long bench cushions, a full sofa seat deck or a T-cushion where a seam would land in the wrong place.
Who it’s for: large or oddly shaped cushions that need one uninterrupted piece. Skip it if: you only have a dining chair or two; you will pay for a lot of leftover material.
- Pro: 90-inch width avoids seams on long cushions.
- Pro: review summary rates quality, functionality and ease of use positively; owners mention it for reupholstering.
- Pro: 4.3/5 from 228 ratings.
- Con: softness, thickness and padding all get mixed feedback.
- Con: some owners report it breaking down within a month, while others find it durable.
5. Tatuo 59″ Bonded Polyester Batting: best thin layer under fabric
Tatuo lists this bonded polyester at 0.1 inch thick, 59 inches wide and 2 yards long. That is too thin to round off foam edges, but it works as a smoothing layer between foam and a tight cover, inside quilted panels, or on thin seat pads. It holds 4.3/5 from 631 Amazon ratings, the second-largest pool here.
Who it’s for: covers that would show foam texture through the fabric, and washable projects. Skip it if: you expect loft; thickness is the most-criticized aspect, with 28 negative mentions.
- Pro: owners say it holds up to cutting and keeps its shape through multiple washes.
- Pro: quality, functionality, softness and durability are all rated positive in the summary.
- Pro: 59-inch width is wider than most rolls in this price tier.
- Con: at 0.1 inch it adds almost no padding.
- Con: value for money gets mixed feedback; some owners think it is overpriced for the amount.
Polyester or cotton batting: which one your project needs
Polyester (often sold as Dacron) is the standard foam wrap. It adds loft, softens foam edges and helps the cover fill out. DoItYourself.com notes that polyester batting resists mildew, which is why it is common in patio and boat cushions. CushionCraft, a US cushion supplier, describes its thermal-bonded polyester as “commonly referred to as Dacron” and lists it as passing California TB 117 flammability rules. That standard applies to CushionCraft’s product, not to every Amazon roll, so check the listing if flammability matters to you.
Cotton batting is denser and flatter. DoItYourself.com explains that cotton felt batting is graded by its linter-to-binder ratio: more linter feels softer but may wear out sooner. Use cotton where you want a firm, smooth surface (slip seats, benches, headboards) and polyester where you want a cushion to look full and rounded.
A quick rule: if the piece has foam that gets sat on and flexes, wrap it in polyester. If the padding sits flat on a board, cotton is the better fit.
How much batting do you need? Yardage math for cushions
Most cushions get an “envelope” wrap: one piece runs across the top, down the front and under the bottom. To size it, add depth + thickness + depth for the length, and use the cushion’s width for the other dimension.
Example: a seat cushion 24 inches wide, 22 inches deep and 4 inches thick needs a piece about 24 x 48 inches (22 + 4 + 22). On a 48-inch-wide roll, two of those pieces fit side by side in every 48 inches of length. Three cushions therefore need 96 inches, about 2.7 yards. On a 36-inch roll you can only cut one per 48-inch length, so the same three cushions need 144 inches, or 4 yards. That difference is why roll width matters more than the per-yard price.
Add a few inches to each piece for trimming, and buy extra if a listing has reviews mentioning short pieces. For cushions with a sagging base, fix the support first: our guide to sagging couch cushion support compares the boards, and our high density foam for couch cushions guide covers replacement foam by density.
Which batting to buy for your situation
- Re-covering 3-4 sofa seat cushions: AK Trading 48″ Dacron. The width saves material and the rating pool is the largest.
- One long bench or T-cushion: PANDOROOM 90 x 108″ sheet, so the wrap has no seam.
- Soft back cushions or pillow refresh: RRKTP 230 GSM, the heaviest stated weight.
- Dining chair slip seats or a headboard: AK Trading 27″ cotton, cut to size.
- Foam texture showing through a tight cover: Tatuo 0.1″ layer.
If you are attaching batting and fabric to a wood frame, a good staple gun matters as much as the batting. See our picks for the best upholstery staple gun. Upholstery batting FAQ
How important is batting in a cushion?
It does three jobs: it rounds the foam’s hard edges, fills the cover so the fabric doesn’t wrinkle, and reduces friction between foam and fabric when you stuff the cushion into its cover. You can skip it on a firm, square-edged cushion, but most covers look fuller with a wrap.
What is the difference between batting and Dacron?
Dacron is a polyester fiber; in upholstery the word is used for polyester batting in general. CushionCraft says outright that its polyester wrap is “commonly referred to as Dacron.” Cotton batting is the other main type.
How thick should upholstery batting be?
Sellers rarely state thickness in a comparable way, which is why we used GSM where it was listed. As a reference, CushionCraft sells its polyester wrap in 3/4, 1 and 2-inch thicknesses. Thin layers like the 0.1-inch Tatuo are smoothing layers, not padding.
Can I use quilt batting for upholstery?
Yes, for flat work like headboards and slip seats; several rolls here are sold for both. For cushion wraps, polyester upholstery batting is the better choice because quilt batting is usually thinner.
Should I glue batting to foam?
On cushions that will be stuffed into a cover, a light coat of spray adhesive keeps the wrap from shifting. That matters most for batting with weak stability, such as the RRKTP roll according to its reviews.
